Tesla Coil

The Tesla Coil

The Tesla Coil was invented in 1891 by Nikola Tesla. It is a "high-frequency air-core transformer", which means that it takes a voltage and ampifies that same voltage to as high as 1 000 000V. The main purpose of the Tesla Coil is to radiate an extremely large electrical-magnetic field and provide power to objects without the usage of cords or wires. The way Tesla was able to use the coil was that he "tuned" the primary and secondary circuits so that they emitted and received the same frequencies.

Experimentation:
  • A fluorescent bulb held in one hand near the coil will light up.

Calculations:
  1. RESISTANCE OF A CONDUCTOR
  2. CAPACITANCES
  3. INDUCTANCES
  4. RESONANCE OF AN LC CIRCUIT

Uses:
  • CRT type displays
  • Create the high voltages required by spark plugs in combustion engines.
  • Provide special effects in th movie industry
