Peeps That Made Electric History
Gilbert was an English physician as well as a natural philosopher. He did many investigations dealing with electricity in relation to magnetism. He was given the title as the "Father of Electricity" due to his incredible studies. The name 'electricity' was of his own choosing, which was derived from the ancient greek word for amber. He originally discovered that the earth was magnetic and that was the reason that compasses pointed north. He was appointed Chief Doctor to Queen Elizabeth I to incorporate magnets in navigation. This revolutionized the english navy. (Jonnes 18-19) Gilbert Reference Gilbert Reference 2
Galvani was an Italian physician from Bologna. His claim to fame came when he discovered that a frogs leg twitches when hit with an electric spark. (Jonnes 30) Volta tried to disprove Galvani's theory on the frog by claiming that the twitch was due to the metal hook. In response, Galvani recreated the experiment without the hook and the frog legs still twitched in response, thus proving it to be due to the electric spark. (Jonnes 31)
Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta is known for the first discovery of the electric battery. He constructed it by using saline copper and zinc disks layered one on top of the other with cloth or paste board soaked in salt water put inbetween the layers. They were put into a cylinder and had insulated wires placed on each of the circular ends of the cylinder. (Jonnes 31-32)
Davy continued work on Volta's groundwork. In the basement of his labratory, he worked on creating stronger and larger batteries. (Jonnes 34) He also later on invented the Davy lamp which was mainly used by miners. Later on in his life he moved to Europe to work with Michael Faraday.Davy Reference
Henry was the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He builtelectromagnets, and while doing this he iscovered the electromagnetic phenomenon of self-inductance. Henry took his knowledge of electromagnets and created the first DC motor.Henry Reference
Faraday was an English chemist and physicist who contributed to many inventions with electromagnets. He established the basis for the magnetic field concept in physics. Some of the things he invented are the electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and electrolysis. Because of Faraday electricity became an imortant use in technology.Faraday Reference
Brush was very interested in electrical lighting and he built simple electrical devices. In college he studied mining engineering because there weren't such fields as electrical engineering. He invented the arc light that was based on the Yablochkov candle.Brush ReferencePage created by: Chris Miller & Tarek Lahlou
