Light Bulb

One of Edison’s most important and influential inventions was the incandescent light bulb. Without the creation of a practical light bulb, modern technology would not be where it was today. The technology used to light a home or workspace after the sun went down could have a dramatically different affect than what we are used to today. There is a distinct possibility that candles and oil or gas lamps could still be used to this day by an average person to light up the night.

The light bulb is a simple and effective piece of technology. Within the glass enclosure of the bulb, a filament such as tungsten is coiled hundreds of times and connected at both ends to a metal wire. In order to generate light, electricity is passed through the filament and wires, completing an electric circuit. The filament heats up as electrons pass through it, forcing atoms to vibrate violently within the metal. These vibrations release light emitting photons which is what allows the light bulb to have a brilliant, low cost glow.
